Syracuse, N.Y. — A Syracuse police officer, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office deputy and an off-duty Syracuse firefighter helped save a man who nearly fell off a highway overpass on Tuesday morning, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

The trio responded to the Hiawatha Boulevard Bridge over Interstate 81 at 5:49 a.m. for a reported suspicious person call. Deputy Kristen Mullen saw a man with a speedo and a cape standing on the bridge who appeared as if he was about to fall into traffic, deputies said.

The man was in emotional distress and standing on the other side of a chain link fence, so Mullen grabbed the man to prevent him from falling, according to deputies. Officer Ryan Jones and off-duty Syracuse firefighter Lt. Chris Haley helped pull the man to safety, deputies said.
