IDF Intel Chief: Hamas Is Deterred, but Islamic Jihad Is a Wild Card
by Benjamin Kerstein
The head of IDF military intelligence said on Wednesday that Hamas has been successfully deterred and was not interested in another war with Israel.
According to Israeli news site Mako, IDF Intelligence Directorate chief Maj. Gen. Tamir Heyman shared this assessment at the Israel Defense and Homeland Expo in Tel Aviv.
“Hamas is very deterred from war and expresses the desire to continue on the track of the [truce] arrangement,” he said.
Although the Islamist terrorist group that rules the Gaza Strip “has growing sovereign obligations,” Heyman added, “through the arrangement, they expect certain compensations.”
He also stated that Hamas’ “obligations are causing tensions with Islamic Jihad.”
“Even though it is still coordinated with Hamas, it has higher explosive potential,” Heyman said of Islamic Jihad.
Heyman also addressed the issue of Iran’s presence in Syria, saying that the IDF’s actions against it have “led to a relative containment of its entrenchment in Syria.”
